PS5 Review: Necro Story

Can this RPG cast a spell on you?

Necro Story is a creature-collection RPG where you play as a (kind of) evil necromancer more into undead shenanigans than saving the world! Command quirky minions, outsmart foes, and snag their souls to power up your team. Expect strategic combat, laughs, and plenty of mischief.

Necro Story is RPG that actually has a sense of humour, I’m joking of course…I know that a good few have their funny moments, but Necro Story leans into this a bit more, almost like a dark comedy version of Paper Mario with its humour but with creature-collecting and more traditional RPG roots.

In terms of gameplay, Necro Story ticks all the right boxes but could do with some refinement. I mean that the combat takes some time to get used to. After using one spell/attack you will have to either use the others available to you or wait till the clock icon disappears so you can use it again. I felt like it wasn’t explained as well as it probably could have been, but again it’s easier once you get used to it.

The humour is mostly great. I did chuckle more times than not, though some jokes did land a bit flat. The art style has a nice hand-drawn look to it that looks more impressive on screen than pictures can really do it justice, but I was impressed with it overall. The soundtrack was also pretty good and I didn’t encounter any glitches through my playthrough.

The Verdict

Necro Story does well as a light-hearted RPG that tries to tickle your funny bone. It’s combat may not appeal to everyone and it probably could be explained better in the opening section, but once you’re used to the mechanics, you’ll be laughing all the way to the finish line.
