Grab your Fever Racket and get ready to hit the court when the latest entry in the Mario Tennis series swings onto Nintendo Switch 2. Try out 30 different Fever Rackets, each with their own special ability, and take your pick from 38 playable characters!
A Mario Tennis title has released on almost every Nintendo console since it’s N64 debut, which also was the game that introduced us to Waluigi for the first time. The majority of these games have all been good fun, some with adventure modes and some not. This latest has one and adds in a few new twists and turns to make things interesting on the tennis court. But is it too much?
The adventure mode isn’t the longest but is interesting as you build up your stats as Baby Mario after being transformed into baby form in the opening cinematic alongside other Mario characters also having been turned into their infant forms. New twists include Fever Rackets that can cause all kinds of chaos on the court with you having to counter elements like ice and fire. The game is easy to handle, and the tutorials are a good way for you to get used to the new gimmicks they’ve included, as well as getting a feel for pulling off specific shots.
The roster is plentiful of Mario characters as you would expect and it is overall a decent sports title, being competitive on an almost Mario Kart level with its antics. Online is a welcome addition with normal and ranked matches for those itching to be even more competitive.
The visuals are vibrant, detailed and well animated. Load times are next to nothing, while music and sound effects all have the Mario influence that you’d be expecting to hear. Framerate is smooth and I didn’t encounter any glitches during my playthrough.
The Verdict
Mario Tennis Fever is an impressive arcade sports title with a twist thanks to the Fever Rackets. The adventure mode is good fun even if its short lived, while the other modes and online play will keep Tennis fans keep swinging for a good amount of time.
