PS5 Review: Raccoo Venture

Is this a nice homage to 90s platformers?

Awake the sacred Power of Guardians in this classical journey full of secrets and discovering. Raccoo Venture is a 3D platform adventure that brings a playful atmosphere, inspired by the golden classics from 90s.

Raccoo Venture is a nod to 3D platformers from the 90s like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro and Banjo-Kazooie to name a few. The story is simple enough but has a good sense of humour while each level has collectibles to find, some that are well hidden because of the camera angle keeping it obscured or have vague requirements to make appear. Raccoo can jump, ground-pound and throw objects at enemies but has no standard attack like you would expect him to have. This does make combat a bit more difficult than the platformers it took inspiration from.

The game has that classic look of a collect-a-thon platformer and while the combat does tend to be its weakest point, the platforming mechanics are impressive and get the job done if this is the type of platformer you are looking for. The levels are nicely varied and while it’s not the longest game out there, it definitely scratched that itch for me as a big fan of the genre.

The visuals are simple but vibrant and has that look of a 90s platformer. The framerate is consistent throughout and I was impressed with the soundtrack that feels like its own homage to Banjo-Kazooie as well. It’s also a well-polished game with little in terms of issues.

The Verdict

If you love classic 90s platformers, then this game will be right up your alley. It delivers a decent and enjoyable experience but plays it a bit safe so it doesn’t stand out near those classics. Still does enough to please fans of the genre though.
