PS5 Review: Necrophosis: Full Consciousness

Should you return to the world of Necrophosis once more?

Begin as Consciousness, trapped within an emaciated, decaying vessel devoid of memories. Explore grotesque environments cursed with eternal deterioration to unravel fragments of the truth and learn why you have awakened. Soon your journey descends into the darker realms of the subconscious as you become the guiding hand that navigates its shadowy depths while piecing together echoes of the past.

Long forsaken gods have been left to rot beyond eternity, yet something still calls. Prepare for a dark odyssey where every disturbing encounter and mind-expanding puzzle will draw you deeper into the macabre.

Last year, I reviewed the Steam version of Necrophosis and I did enjoy it, even though I didn’t want to give a lot away regarding what it would offer players. Console gamers now have a chance to find out with the release of Necrophosis: Full Consciousness, which is the full game but with the recently released DLC chapter.

For those who have not played the original, Necrophosis is a cross between a puzzler and a walking sim. It’s set in a nightmare realm setting with Lovecraftian vibes with plenty of grim creatures and haunting locations to come across. It feels very philosophical in its presentation and it does feel similar in its design to Dragonis Games’ first entry, The Shore which is also bundled with the Full Consciousness physical version, which I will be reviewing after this.

The overall game takes between 1-2 hours to complete, then the Subconscious DLC takes a little bit longer. The PS5 Pro does well to push the game visually and in terms of performance. The framerate is consistent and the game looks incredible with high level of detail, some might argue too much detail for how grim some things look in it. The DLC itself is more of the same, but is a nice addition.

The Verdict

Necrophosis: Full Consciousness is well worth exploring if you are a Lovecraft fan. IAts not the longest game out there, but it’s one that will stay with you for a very long time.

Score: 8.5
