Does this Metroidvania game fall flat?
A symbiote is torn in two in a cave by a mysterious machine. Working together with a headless body, the remaining half must find its way through a complex metroidvania-style world filled with puzzles to be reunited with its vital other half. Airhead is an adventure through a sprawling interconnected world, where you must explore, evolve and overcome intricate puzzles to succeed. You play as Airhead, a small Body and the round inflated organism it uses as a Head. And while Head is slowly but surely deflating, you have a chance to save its life. To do so, you must use air tanks to keep Head inflated while you explore Airhead’s metroidvania-style world, searching for amazing abilities and upgrades that will unlock new areas and puzzles for you to overcome. On your adventure, it will be up to you to uncover the true connection between Head, the air tanks, and the technology that litters the world, so you can save Head no matter the cost.
Airhead is a charming Metroidvania puzzle-platformer where you have to keep your character Head inflated to keep him alive. It has a Limbo-style feel to it and the puzzles are intriguing, even if they aren’t the toughest out there.
Airhead’s controls are pretty simple to get to grips with, while there are plenty of secrets to be found along with new areas to reach in true Metroidvania fashion. I did come across a few glitches but I powered through them because I was captivated with the interconnected world. I found the game’s visuals to be very charming overall with a good story that kept me hooked till the end.
It may get frustrating for some to have to keep refilling Head with air, but it does keep you from being complacent. If you can get past that, then you’ll find a rewarding game here. I can’t say I’m a fan of the price tag of £15.99, I personally think it’s about £4-5 too high for what you get…but other than that, it’s hard not to recommend.
The Verdict
Airhead is a charming Metroidvania puzzle-platformer. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea and it does have it’s issues, but if you can give it a chance then you’ll come to enjoy it’s story, secrets and won’t stop until the end.
