Is this game wheely good?
A new 3v3 game experience, Drag x Drive challenges players to use both Joy-Con 2 at the same time to intuitively steer, speed up and make plays.
Drag x Drive is a strange game from Nintendo, one that makes you use two Joy-Cons by rolling them across a surface like a table or your legs, which propels your robot in a wheelchair character forward, or to make turns. You can also grab a basketball and throw it towards the hoop with a simple gesture. It takes a while to get used to, but it can be fun once you’ve got the hang of things.
I guess the problem is that while it feels intuitive, it does actually take a quick toll on the arms to keep doing the motions. I honestly have a newfound respect for wheelchair users, so maybe it has helped raise awareness even if it might have been not what they intended. It’s a game that is fun to play in 3v3 matches, but in small bursts. It does have a few other solo modes like racing through checkpoints, but it is limited.
The visuals are simple, but effective. Framerate is consistent throughout and while I think some standard controls would have been welcome, it’s hard to know what that would even look like.
The Verdict
Drag x Drive is an interesting concept. Shooting hoops in a wheelchair with immersive motion controls is fun, but it can start to ache after a few rounds. It’s enjoyable, but only in short bursts.
