He’s going to take you back to the past, but is this a s***ty game that sucks a**?
The ULTIMATE NERD RAGE is back in Angry Video Game Nerd 8-bit – an all-new action platformer set in the AVGN universe! As The Nerd, blast your way across a host of pixel art levels crawling with zombies, mechanical skeletons, ghoulish reapers, and more! As The Nerd heads into the pixel-ridden fight, he must face off against familiar faces from his past! Waiting at the end of every level, bosses from the AVGN universe hope to destroy The Nerd!
I’ve been a big fan of AVGN since the very first episode and always look forward to the next, even if it takes a long time between them. The Nerd’s sense of humour, his rants and replaying terrible games is just right up my alley. This latest videogame entry bearing the name of The Nerd is a homage to the old school Mega Man games with its 2D platforming and side-scrolling action.
There’s plenty of nods to past AVGN episodes, along with appearances from characters from the series that pop up now and then. The core gameplay itself is as challenging as a traditional Mega Man game, even on the easiest difficulty it’s no walk in the park. If it wasn’t related to AVGN, it’d still be a decent homage to Mega Man. So even if you aren’t particularly a fan of his humour, you’d still enjoy it if you happen to like anything like an old school Mega Man game.
The 8-bit style fits well with both the game and the narrative, especially with how many 8-bit games that The Nerd has done videos on in the past. The level design has plenty of frustrating elements that he himself would rant about for ages, but that’s part of the charm, I guess. It’s both fun and annoying in equal amounts.
The Verdict
AVGN is still a great pleasure of mine to watch, this Mega Man-like game is also a nice nod to classic games and to the AVGN universe itself. Definitely worth a go even if The Nerd’s antics aren’t your style.
