PS5 Review: Steel Seed

Should you sneak past this one?

Steel Seed is a stealth action-adventure game set in a dark, sci-fi world where humanity hangs on the brink of extinction. Join protagonist Zoe and her flying drone companion KOBY, as they investigate the depths of a hostile underground facility in search of answers and the key to the survival of mankind.

Steel Seed is a bit of a strange game. It has a great setting, and I really enjoyed the story, but the game itself can’t really decide if it wants to be a stealthy one or an action packed one. The combat itself is janky but can feel enjoyable at times. I think it would have worked better just being a stealth game instead of that combined with hack-n-slash combat, but that’s just my opinion.

It feels like a game that could become a decent series if given a chance, though. The setting feels like it could be expanded upon in future games, and I hope that is the case. It just needs to decide exactly what it is trying to be. The stealth definitely outshines the combat throughout, so if they can either improve the combat for a sequel or scrap it for more stealth mechanics, then it could be great.

Like I said, it has a great setting. The sci-fi art style is well done and ultimately, the game looks great. The visuals are superb, and it runs at a solid framerate throughout. I didn’t come across any glitches during my playthrough either. The voice-acting is pretty good, and the soundtrack has some impressive tunes in there.

The Verdict

Steel Seed has a great setting, decent story and superb visuals…and yet its combat lets it down with its janky nature. The stealth is the star here and hopefully a sequel would lean more on this.
