PS5 Review: Extinction Rifts

Is this fast-paced FPS due for extinction?

As the Ancient Monoliths appeared and the wrong people took them over, the operation “Last Breath” started! It’s just a matter of time until our extinction… Unless we can stop them! Equip yourself by selecting between 8 different weapons and 5 unique skills, fight enemies on secret headquarters and make sure to destroy the Ancient Monoliths! An absurd amount of power is required to destroy them! Luckily, you’ve got the Extinction Gauntlet, a punching gadget that is connected to your adrenaline, making combos raises your adrenaline making your punches more destructive, only a truly powerful punch can obliterate a Monolith! Can you destroy them all and avoid our extinction?

Extinction Rifts feels like an old-school shooter with its retro visuals, but it’s very fast-paced as you run-and-gun through the stages. Your target are Monoliths that can only be destroyed when you have a high-enough combo to be powerful enough to destroy it with your gauntlet. It will take a while to get used to the speed of the game and how it works with the different mechanics, but it is an enjoyable experience overall.

The visuals are decent enough and the game runs at a smooth framerate. Sound design gets the job done, while the character models are a bit of a mixed bag in their appearance, but are nicely varied in terms of their attacks and movements.

The Verdict

Extinction Rifts is a decent FPS that runs smoothly and is fun to play. It does have a bit of a steep learning curve that some might find off-putting, but if you love fast-paced shooters then this is definitely worth a look.
