PS5 Review: Bleak Faith: Forsaken

More than just a sci-fi Souls-like?

Explore the last remnants of civilization in this vast, unforgiving, and interconnected world. Learn what is left of its history. Discover pockets of civilization in the perpetually expanding Omnistructure. Lose yourself in a journey unlike any other. Rich in atmosphere and rife with danger, be prepared to be immersed in a new world unlike any you’ve experienced before. Not every path is paved and catered to you, so be prepared to run, climb, leap, to ascend in Bleak Faith.

I’m not the greatest at Souls-like games, in fact the only one I have ever managed to beat was Elden Ring and that was with a bit of help from other players for the later boss fights. Still, I am getting slightly better over time and went into Bleak Faith: Forsaken quietly confident I could get far in it…

The game has great looking environments, terrifying enemies and that classic Souls-like difficulty that you come to expect. It does currently have a few technical hiccups that hopefully will be fixed over time, but they do hold the game back from being a truly great Souls-like. That said, it’s still got its issues such as a lack of lore or narrative, which is something important for games like these. I mean why would you devote your time, anger and frustration for something with little to no story?

I say anger and frustration in terms of how many times most will die in Souls-like games. They are unforgiving by design, but there does seem to be a lack of narrative focus compared to other games like it. I’m impressed with its visuals and love the sci-fi environment they’ve created here, but it does seem to be a bit more for show than anything else.

The Verdict

Bleak Faith: Forsaken has the look and feel of a Souls-like game, but maybe not the heart of one. Its technical issues hold it back even further, but if you can get past these issues and a lack of narrative, while in desperate need of a new Souls-like, then this will satisfy you.
