PS5 Review: Bye Sweet Carole

Is this hand-drawn adventure worth exploring?

For his new project, the author of the Remothered horror series went for an art direction inspired by the greatest animation films. The stunning visuals will support the incredible adventures of the main character, Lana Benton, in her quest to uncover the truth about the mysterious Carole Simmons’ disappearance.

The second you start up Bye Sweet Carole you will instantly think of classic Disney animation films. The inspiration is there in spades but besides the amazing animation, is there more to this outing?

The story itself is gripping from beginning to end, while the gameplay is a mixture of platforming, puzzles and action scenes where you are trying to escape from the clutches of the dark forces chasing you. The latter is a bit hit and miss, but the rest does well overall. It’s a bit of a short experience, but definitely a memorable one. I honestly couldn’t put down the controller until I finished.

The framerate is consistent, and the art style is beautiful. Voice-acting is believably impressive, while the soundtrack is sublime. I didn’t encounter any glitches during my playthrough. The controls can feel a bit stiff at times, but nothing that should stop you from playing on.

The Verdict

Bye Sweet Carole is a brief, but beautiful game. Its animation is the star of the show, the story is decent, and the puzzles are nicely designed. It has a few hiccups here and there with its controls and action sequences, but otherwise I highly recommend it.
