Does anyone fancy a quick run?
MetroLand is a new endless runner that takes what you know and love about the classic endless runner and turns it up to 11! MetroLand is an arcade game where you run and dodge obstacles at full speed trying to get as far as you can. It’s an endless runner that follows the heritage of the classics of the genre to deliver a game with endless action and lots of power-ups. In this game you’ll experience adventures in the not-too-distant future where you play as rebels fleeing oppressive forces. To do this, you need to do what you know best: run and achieve good scores in each match
If you’ve ever played an endless runner game like Temple Run, then you’ll know what to expect from a game like MetroLand. You don’t see many endless runners on consoles, probably because console players wouldn’t put up with extortionate microtransactions for keeping your run going, in which most of them do.
The game is set on the streets as you are being chased by officers, there claims to be a story mode but it essentially just unlocks other new menu options like challenges, upgrades and so on. You will naturally unlock them after playing the game a few times and getting the necessary overall score to get the next “upgrade”. The trophy list is easy enough, it just gets a bit grindy as you will need to unlock almost everything, but like I said you’ll get that simply by playing.
The visuals are simple, but get the job done. The controls are handled well and you never feel like you’ve been screwed over by them, so I cant fault it for that. I think my problem is that the runs do just blend together after a few tries and it all becomes routine so quickly. I know that was to be expected, but I was hoping to be surprised just a little bit. The framerate is solid, load times between runs are next to nothing and I didn’t come across any glitches throughout. There are no differences in performance between the PS4 and PS5 versions other than the former having slightly faster loading times.
The Verdict
MetroLand is your typical endless runner minus the microtransactions. It does this admirably, even if it becomes very repetitive and predictable after a few runs. Trophy hunters should be able to grind a platinum (or two) out of this after a few hours.
