PS5 Review: The Last Shot

Is this diesel-punk world worth your time?

An adventurous engineer, a diesel-punk world divided by endless conflict, and a whole lot of colossal guns. Sounds like a good time! With massive war machines threatening your home, will you be the one small cog that brings it all to a halt?

The Last Shot is a puzzle platformer set in a diesel-punk world. Your character is simply trying to move through a warzone until obstacles get in the way. The puzzles can be on the tough side, so don’t feel bad if you are stumped from time to time. There is a hint system that shows part of the solution in a thought bubble, but even then some of these can offer little help.

You are equipped with a wrench, a hammer and your hands. The wrench naturally fixes things and the hammer bashes things as you would expect, but you’ll need your hands free of these to open doors and so on. It took me an embarrassing time to figure that little detail out, and even then it was my other half who worked it out for me. Like I said, don’t feel bad if you are stumped…even if the solution is very simple…

Puzzles vary from rotating pipes in the right order to placing blocks in the right spot, activating them so they propel you forward towards the next platform to just a simple combination deduction, and plenty more in between.

The design of the characters reminds me of the Simpsons, while the art style is bleak by design, but I mean that in a positive sense. There is no voice-acting, but the soundtrack is impressive. No glitches or framerate woes either, so all good overall.

The Verdict

The Last Shot is an impressive puzzle platformer that will get your brain cooking. It has a great art style and the puzzles are well thought out. Definitely one for fans of the genre.
