Ready for the ultimate arcade escape?
A fun ticket redemption arcade game with realistic physics, goofy robots, a global ranking system and lots of silly prizes. The game includes 15+ modern inspired arcade machines and a pawn shop to keep money in your pocket. The Coin Game is made by a solo developer.
If you’ve ever been to an arcade or amusement park, then you’ll know what to expect from The Coin Game. Claw machines, arcade booths, ball games and coin games and everything else in between is what you’ll be able to do in this game. You can also play the game in different modes like Survival mode which puts health and energy in place, along with you having to earn money to use in the arcade by doing odd jobs and pawning prizes, you’ll also need to eat and get to bed before curfew ends.
If that is too stressful, there’s a Birthday mode which lets you have all the freedom there is along with teleporting to specific locations on the island. It’s actually quite ambitious in its scope, which is impressive from a solo developer. The Quickplay mode just lets you select what arcade games you want to play. There’s even laser tag and kart racing to keep things interesting.
Instead of people walking around the arcades and other locations, they are populated by robots. I don’t really know why that is, but I guess it’s better than having a bunch of screaming kids running around.
The controls are a bit clunky and there are a few issues with menus and the overall interface that sometimes make closing the game the only option. It luckily hasn’t happened much, but I’m hoping the developer will patch it more to make the UI more seamless and bug-free. The games themselves are good fun and you’ll definitely get that arcade vibe if you haven’t been for a while, I’m almost tempted to find the nearest one myself…
The visuals are basic but get the job done. The different venues are a nice addition and there’s a nice level of attention to detail here. Load times between areas are short and the framerate is consistent.
The Verdict
While a bit clunky in its presentation and gameplay, The Coin Game provides a great homage to classic arcades and amusement parks. It is still highly impressive from a solo developer, and I can’t wait to see what he does next.
