Xbox Series X/S – Nintendo Switch Review: The Beast Inside

Can you survive the Beast inside?

The Beast Inside is a unique, gripping twist on thriller and survival horror. The game mixes intriguing story-driven adventure with unnerving survival horror experience. Immerse in the tale of long-buried secrets, personal tragedies, and madness. Play as two protagonists living in different centuries but bounded by dark heritage.

A first-person horror game is nothing new these days, but it’s not always done particularly well. Does this latest one fall at the first hurdle or does it belong up there with the best of the genre?

The Beast Inside is more of a horror walking simulator with puzzles than a true survival horror, but that aside, I was impressed with what they’ve pulled off here with the different timelines and protagonists through each. The puzzles are mostly well done with only the odd dud one along the way and the story is engaging from start to finish.

The original game came out for PC in 2019 and has only now dwindled its way to the likes of Xbox, PlayStation and Switch. I’m not sure what’s taken so long but knowing that, I had doubts of the console optimisation. There are a few issues here and there, but ultimately the developer has done well here and it handles well.

I had access to the Xbox Series X/S and Switch versions and while I was impressed with the fast-loading, faster framerate and better visuals on the Xbox version, I was also astounded by how well the Switch version holds up. Sure, it’s not quite as flash but a decent port nonetheless. Voice-acting is pretty good and the soundtrack adds to the creepy atmosphere well.

The Verdict

While not quite the survival horror experience it’s marketed as, The Beast Inside is a decent port of an impressive horror game. The puzzles are inventive, the atmosphere is chilling and the story is intriguing. It may have a few glitchy elements here and there, but overall it’s yet another good horror title.
