PS5 Review: Unholy

Is this game a sinner?

Open the doors between your everyday reality and a dark unholy world to unveil the mystery of the disappearance of your child. Explore both worlds to find clues, solve puzzles, decide whether you infiltrate or fight brutal enemies and stand up to an aberrant establishment.

Unholy is a horror game that looks the part with its stunning visuals and creepy atmosphere, but can it deliver more beyond that?

The answer is sadly, no. The stealth it forces you to take is fundamentally broken and frustrating, the puzzles are poorly designed and the combat is pretty basic. The game does have its good moments, but they are fleeting and rare.

The story itself didn’t grip me either and it feels under developed overall. I feel there are elements here that work and others that don’t, so it’d be interesting to see the developers try their hand at a more traditional horror game as opposed to a psychological one like The Medium, which this tries to be.

Like I said, the visuals are stunning and they really do know how to nail down the horror setting, which makes the gameplay flaws all the more frustrating. The missed potential here is tragic, but I do have high hopes for the developers moving forward. If they can learn from their mistakes, focus on the positives of the feedback and implement that into their next title, then they could give us something truly special.

The Verdict

Unholy unfortunately fails to deliver beyond its visuals and atmosphere. The core gameplay has too many issues to overlook, but I do believe the developers can redeem themselves with their next entry. They have the potential, there’s no denying that. If they can just learn from their errors, then their next game will be amazing.
