PS5 Review: Last Night of Winter

Is this 2D Souls-like worth your time?

Wake up and walk, Warden! Because the siege continues. We must find the Heir… And finally put an end to this cursed night.

If you’ve ever played a game like Dark Souls and thought…I’d love a 2D version of this, then have I got news for you…

Last Night of Winter provides exactly that. Tough combat with stamina meters and parrying attacks against a variety of different enemies and bosses. But beyond the combat itself, is there more to the game?

It’s here where the game starts to lose it’s focus. Your character is slow when traversing normally, so outside of combat he ends up in this frustrating exploration mode which is painfully slow and it just doesn’t flow as well as the combat itself.

It’s a shame because I like the concept and they’ve done well to integrate Souls-like elements into the game, but the exploration element of the game is a letdown. The visuals are simple, but charming. The writing is decent enough and the soundtrack ticks the right boxes.

The Verdict

Last Night of Winter has some good ideas and it implements most of them well. The combat is well thought out, but exploring is slow, dull and frustrating. If you can overlook that then might be for you.

Score: 6.5
