PS5 Review: Bloodhound

Is this shooter DOOM-ed?

The cult of Astaroth summoned the dark forces of Hell. You have to stop them and your guns will help you. Fight the cultists and demons and try to stop Astaroth from coming to Earth. Enjoy a Fresh Look & Old Fun in this arcade horror FPS game inspired by the legends of the 90s.

Bloodhound clearly takes a lot of inspiration from the likes of Doom and Quake, but is there more to it than that? The formula is simple, push forward killing demons and cultists, gather keys to unlock doors, find secret areas and defeat bosses. There are a lot of moments where you’ll come across a barrier that forces you to deal with the surrounding enemies before it disappears.

The problem with this is that most of the time, the enemies end up spawning behind you so you need to backtrack to deal with them. It’s a bit of a bizarre gameplay choice and it ruins the pace of what was a fast-paced shooter. Enemy design is nicely varied and the guns are a mixture of great and not-so-great, but there will be a gun that works best for you overall.

The visuals are decent and get the job done. Levels are nicely designed, while enemies look good overall. The framerate is solid throughout and load times are short. The soundtrack also takes inspiration from Doom with it’s tracks, which is always a plus.

The Verdict

While it doesn’t reinvent the genre, Bloodhound does well in providing a decent Doom-esque experience. It does have its problem with the barrier placing and some weapons aren’t great, but for those who love boomer shooters, this will scratch that itch.

Score: 7.5
