Time to see who tops the VGR list?
2008. It’s been a long but enjoyable year full of great games. This is the time of the year where the best of the bunch are recognised in the Game of the Year awards. This year, VGR is doing it’s very own GOTY and would be honored if you could join us. Let’s take a look at the rules:
The way this will work is quite simple. We’ll begin with best games for each console and PC then move onto what game was the greatest this year. So let’s begin:
The nominees for the Wii Award are:
Super Smash Bros Brawl – This game finally came out in Europe this year after a rather long delay. It had everything that fans had asked for and then some. What better way to unwind than settling that old Sonic vs. Mario debate through a fist fight?
Zack & Wiki: Quest For Barbaros’ Treasure – Capcom really did a great job in making a truly unique game that only the Wii could pull off. Using only the Wii Remote to play and solve puzzles.
Animal Crossing: Let’s Go To The City – Nintendo released yet another Animal Crossing that remained the same, yet added online for the first time to a console version. A hit with fans, not so much with everyone else.
Mario Kart Wii – Mario and co hit the Wii earlier in the year using the Wii Wheel and introducing motorcycles. Perhaps the greatest version of Mario Kart to date.
And the winner is….
SUPER SMASH BROS BRAWL – It was a tough call between this and Mario Kart Wii, but Brawl won it with its incredible cast of fighters and a under-rated story mode that has some great cutscenes that would make any Nintendo fan cry tears of joy.
PC Nominations are:
Crysis Warhead – EA’s sequel to the original Crysis was great, but very brief.
Spore – Will Wright’s much awaited game allowed gamers to flex their creative muscle, but the main campaign was very short.
Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People – Telltale made yet another great episodic series here and is one that anyone with a sense of humour should check out.
Fallout 3 – Bethesda did a great job with this game, it’s a treasure trove of riches.
And the winner is:
FALLOUT 3 – It’s hard not to love Fallout 3. It has so many things to do and is very time consuming, but I love every second that I play it.
360 nominations are:
Gears of War 2 – Cliffy B promised that Gears 2 would be bigger, better and more badass. He wasnt lying. This sequel takes us deeper into the story while stepping up the gameplay a considerable notch with epic battles and improved multiplayer.
Fable 2 – Peter Moyneux’s much awaited sequel to the original Fable improved upon it tenfold, despite a few glitchy moments and delayed downloadable content.
Fallout 3 – The 360 version has exclusive DLC on the way, which should keep it alive in many 360’s for a bit longer
Grand Theft Auto IV – Niko Bellic entered Liberty City earlier this year in the greatest game in the series. Rockstar listened to their fans and delivered on their promises.
And the winner is:
GRAND THEFT AUTO IV – It was a close call between this and Gears 2, but GTA IV has The Lost and Damned content in Feb 09 to look forward to. It’s one of those games that just doesnt disappoint and is a blast to play.
Up for the PS3 award are:
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots – Old Snake said goodbye in this epic conclusion to the main MGS storyline. Full of twists and turns, plus giving closure to the many questions that fans have been wondering since the original Metal Gear.
LittleBigPlanet – LBP is a unique game that allows you to create your own levels and then play them. Sackboy is your character and the whole thing is just charming…if it wasnt for Sony deleting gamers’ homages to other games.
Grand Theft Auto IV – PS3 owners also deserve their nomination for GTA IV. It’s a great game regardless of what platform you play it on.
Resistance 2 –Nathan Hale returns to kick some more Chimera ass in this sequel to the PS3 launch title, Resistance: Fall of Man. It has a great campaign and a unique co-op experience that is outstanding.
And the winner is:
METAL GEAR SOLID 4: GUNS OF THE PATRIOTS – How could I deny Solid Snake this award? It’s not like he’ll be accepting anymore after this. Hideo Kojima is literally a genius and I thank him for freeing me of the many questions about the series that got answered in MGS 4. The story stands above anything else that came before it and will take something special to top it.
Our final award is the VG-Reloaded – Game of the Year 2008 award…which all previous winners of awards will be nominated:
In the VG-Reloaded – Game of the Year 2008 award, those chosen to win the award are:
Super Smash Bros Brawl – Nintendo created one hell of a game here with the best cast of characters in any fighting game.
Fallout 3 – The guys at Bethesda should be so proud of this game. It’s truly remarkable from start to finish.
Grand Theft Auto IV – Rockstar created an amazing sandbox game, yet again but improving upon it in every single way.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots – MGS 4 concludes gaming’s best story in a memorable way that left a tear dangling in the corner of my eye. I salute you Snake.
The winner of the VG-Reloaded GotY award 2008 is……………..
METAL GEAR SOLID 4: GUNS OF THE PATRIOTS
You may be surprised, you may not be. MGS 4 recieved a score of 9.8 from me back when it came out as did GTA IV, while Fallout 3 gained a perfect 10. I chose MGS 4 because it was the most memorable game that I’ve played all year, it’s gripping, emotional and incredible. I will miss Snake more than most, which is why his final mission becomes this year’s winner.
This concludes another great year at VG-Reloaded. Enjoy your holidays and I’ll see you back in Jan.
Solid snake still runs it. MGS4 best game made to date, best gaming series made to date. Understand its greatness now- it may never be beaten- the re may never be another experience like it. I almost had intercourse with the disc LMAO.
finally, MGS4 Game of the Year! I can’t understand how can it not be.
You mean Super Smash Bros Brawl didn’t win?!? I really want to know why!?!
Aside from the instant dislike for the game after 30 minutes of playing… I can’t see why it didn’t win!!!
I completly agree. I think Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the best game ever. Nothing else hit me so hard than this game, so MSG4 and Hideo Kojima deserves all the honors.
WHOOO-HOO!
MGS4 FTW! Best choice that could have been made.
I think GTA: IV should have earned GOTY award.
One thing i find funny about this list though is that both the Wii and PS3 had an exclusive title as best game of the year, yet the best the Xbox 360 could offer is a multiplatform game also available on the PS3…………….
Metal Gear Solid 4 deserves all the praise and hype its received. Perhaps it may never be surpassed, we will all miss Solid Snake, and the cast of MGS. I would not be a gamer, if not because I was introduced to MGS 1 for PS1, so I thank Kojima and his team for bringing us such a great experience, but most importantly for completing the saga in such a formidable way.
METAL GEAR SOLID 4 RRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
