PS5 Review: Still Wakes The Deep: Siren’s Rest

Is this worth sinking to the inky depths for?

1986. The Beira D is now a groaning steel catacomb interred in the inky depths of the North Sea. What really happened that December day in 1975, when communications to the mainland were severed and the rig sank without a trace? What answers can be given to families who still grieve, ten years on?

Still Wakes the Deep is an impressive, immersive experience with a story that has memorable moments scattered throughout. It feels like it could be a good premise for a film and while its brief, it definitely will stick with me for a long time. Siren’s Rest acts as a kind of epilogue with your character diving to the wreckage of the Beira D looking for answers.

You’ll spend some time swimming the depths of North Sea for the wreckage before finally exploring the interior of the oil rig itself. You’ll find a few keepsakes from the crew to take home to their families as well as the remains themselves, which raises more questions for your character than answers. There are still a few scary moments to be found, but it’s more of an emotional story than anything else.

Gameplay is just as it was in the base game, with the exception being that your character will have to disconnect their breathing cord at certain points where it gets stuck or to explore air pockets. It’s just a little bit shorter than the main game but feels like good value overall.

The visuals are still great with highly detailed surroundings and character models. The framerate is consistent, and the voice-acting is again brilliant with believable performances all round. The music is also atmospheric and memorable. I didn’t come across any bugs during my playthrough either.

The Verdict

Still Wakes The Deep: Siren’s Rest feels like a decent epilogue to the story and while it doesn’t answer all questions, it does feel like a natural add-on to the plot that ties it altogether. If you played the main game, then this is essential.
