PS5 Review: Toodee and Topdee

Can this 2D/Top-down puzzler deliver?

A cosmic turbulence caused the 2D Platformer and the Top-Down Puzzler dimensions to merge! Switch between Toodee and Topdee and their unique perspectives to overcome hard-as-nails challenges, solve mind-melting puzzles and defeat huge bosses. Oh, and there’s a co-op mode!

Toodee and Topdee is a different type of platforming puzzler. It gives you control of two characters of the same names and each sees their reality in either 2D or a top-down view respectively. It can be played in co-op or it can be solo as you switch between the characters. Both characters will need to cooperate in order to progress to the end of each stage as you switch perspectives to solve puzzles such as moving blocks in one perspective to make a bridge for the other and so on.

The good news is that no two puzzles are repeated, so the game doesn’t get repetitive and always feels fresh. There are assist options as well so you can have things like infinite health if you want to make things easier on yourself, or if you are playing with a younger gamer and want to take the pressure off them. There are boss battles as well and they are quite brilliant in their look and design.

The visuals have an old-school 2D look to them and has plenty of charm to them. Switching perspectives at a touch of a button is seamless and there is no performance drop. The soundtrack is also pretty retro which adds to the classic platforming feel.

The Verdict

Toodee and Topdee is a charming puzzle platformer that has great ideas and really delivers on them. The assist options make it more accessible to younger players and the variety of puzzles and the boss battles elevate this game from a maybe to a must buy.
