PS4 Review: Devil May Cry HD Collection

Dante’s back in this HD remaster…

The popular stylish action games Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2 and Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition return in one collection! As Dante, the ultimate devil hunter, you’ll join forces with appealing characters such as Trish, Lady and Lucia.

Devil May Cry is one of Capcom’s great franchises, so it was clearly due for a PS4 compilation of the original trilogy and that’s what we’ve got…even if it’s sadly nothing more than an upscaled port of the PS3 HD collection that came out in 2012.

The games are classics, but I can imagine a few have missed out on them…which is why I’m surprised that not a great level of care has gone into this version. It’s labelled as a HD version, yet the menu doesn’t even fill the screen. It would have also been nice to have some added incentive for those with a PS4 Pro, be it upscaled to 4K or something around that. I know it might have been tricky considering the original games are quite old now, but I still think they could have done more here.

Having said that, the trilogy is at a reduced price of £25 instead of most remasters that are usually full price. You do get quite a lot of gameplay for your buck and It’s good to see the game running at 60fps though and even though the games are perhaps a bit dated in terms of fixed camera angles and controls, though having said that they are still great overall. The textures could have been improved slightly over the PS3 version as well, which feels like a missed opportunity.

The Verdict

This HD Collection doesn’t add anything new that the PS3 version didn’t already have, but it gives gamers a chance who missed out on the original games, which deserve to be played in my opinion…I just wish that they had received a bit more TLC overall.
