PS4 Review: Call of Duty: Black Ops III – Zombies Chronicles

Once more unto the breach…

This one struck me as a complete surprise, what with Infinite Warfare already being out…but Activision has brought out a collection of 8 remastered zombies levels from past Call of Duty games to Black Ops III. It also isn’t included in the Season Pass and costs roughly £25. The 8 maps include classics Nacht der Untoten, Verruckt, and Shi No Numa from World at War, Kino Der Toten, Ascension, Shangri-la, and Moon from Black Ops and finally Origins from Black Ops II.

It’s great for me since I’ve missed out on a lot of these maps and I imagine great for fans who’ve upgraded to the next wave of console and now no longer have the original games or console to play it on. The work gone into the remastered maps is impressive and the difficulty hasn’t let up one bit. I must have have tried 6 times to get past the first round of Moon with 3 other players only to get blown up by demon dogs. And I mean all of us died in the first round. It can be brutal to say the least.

As with other maps, the solution to getting anywhere near completion is no small feat and complicated as it is vague. Working with 3 other players is definitely the only way I can imagine anyone getting through these brutal maps, but even then teamwork is a must. Those running off on their own can expect a quick death.

It would have been nice to get the entire backlog of zombie maps here, such as the Five level set in the Pentagon. Purely as it was the first Zombies level I had played and it would have been nice to have a trip down memory lane, but maybe they might add it to another game down the line. I can only dream…

But that’s not all you get with the download, you also get 20 Vials of Liquid Divinium, 2 All-New Whimsical GobbleGums and Zombies Pack-A-Punch Weapon Camo (includes 5 Colour Variants). All of which come in very handy as you can imagine and make up for the price tag, well almost…I can imagine feeling a bit cheated if I had bought the Season Pass. But then again, this isn’t the first time that COD has done something like this…Variety Map Pack *cough cough*.

The Verdict

If you can overlook that it’s not included in the Season Pass, Zombies Chronicles is a great addition to Black Ops III. It would have been nice to have all the previous Zombies maps, but this is a more than welcome add-on.
