Nintendo Switch Review: Paper Wars: Cannon Fodder

Rock, Paper, Missiles?

Paper Wars Cannon Fodder is a tower defence video game developed by several Polish and Hungarian outsourced programmers of iFun4all team, in the cheapest way you can imagine. What’s the so-called brilliant goal of the game? You would never guess. It is about destroying all enemies! The same well-known thrilling story, hordes of cold-blooded enemies trying to survive the Armageddon! There are some additional goals to be achieved in different missions and levels – watch your right! The game can be played by up to four players in co-op mode. If you think you need some extraordinary power-ups, you can get them during three campaigns: Classic, Winter Assault and Cyber Wars. ‘Hand made’ graphics, soviet style military music and annoying sound effects make players eager to complete each level and collect medals for their outstanding efforts

Paper Wars is a strategy game where you literally drop the bomb on your incoming enemies, wave after wave. These enemies come in the form of paper soldiers and besides timing your attacks or landing the bombs on power ups, there’s not a whole lot more to the game itself. I’m confused as how they can call it a tower defence game as you don’t actually spend resources on fortifying your base or even have forces stopping the onslaught…all you have in a target reticule for where your missiles will drop and you hold down the button longer for maximum damage.

That’s the long and short of it, really. I wouldn’t recommend playing it on the basic difficulty as there is no challenge there, whatsoever. The menu interface is also quite problematic as you try and select the right mode as it’s tricky to determine which option is highlighted.

The visuals are simplistic, but it does run fairly smoothly in both handheld and docked modes. I would also recommend turning off the rumble, as it can be incredibly loud and annoying. The same goes for the music, so maybe turn it down a little bit is all I can recommend.

The Verdict

Paper Wars: Cannon Fodder is a simplistic game, but one that could have been so much more. The lack of variety in gameplay runs paper-thin quickly, if you’ll pardon the pun. It’s not bad if you’re looking for a time wasting game, but those looking for a real tower defence game should look elsewhere.
