PS5 Review: Trepang2

Is this FPS worth your time? Have no F.E.A.R…

Become the ultimate badass in Trepang2: A gory, action-packed FPS set in the distant future. Unleash all hell on your enemies, dodge bullets and leave a trail of destruction in this hardcore and frenetic shooter. You play as an escaped soldier, who has no memories of their past life, but is infused with supernatural abilities. Revenge is on your mind, and you’ll stop at nothing to get what you want. Deliver devastating punches, sneak around in the shadows, wield explosive weapons, and give the bad guys a taste of their own medicine.

When I first heard of Trepang2, I thought was there a first Trepang that I somehow missed? A quick Google search revealed that there was an original Trepang game but it’s unrelated and based on a sea cucumber of all things So with that mystery unravelled, let’s take a look at the game…

After playing the game for a few seconds, you’ll get to know what the game is all about. It handles like a mixture of F.E.A.R and Crysis but intensely faster paced than both of these. Your character can slow down time and can cloak at a moment’s notice. You can also slide into enemies to knock them off their feet and even hold them hostage, as well as throwing the hostages towards other enemies while attaching a grenade to them.

The thing that will stand out the most with Trepang2 besides it’s fast-paced shooting is it’s gore. You are able to shoot off heads and limbs with no issues at all. I was surprised to find Trepang2 doesn’t allow you to look down the scope of your weapons, so it feels more of an old-school FPS in this regard. The good news is that you can get upgrades for your guns that you can attach at workbenches, the interface of which looks exactly like swapping attachments from the Crysis games.

Trepang2’s action may be slick and fast paced, but the story is a bit underwhelming. It’s also quite a short game at just a few hours, but there is a large challenge for those wanting the Platinum trophy. You’ll need to beat the game on the hardest difficulty, one of which isn’t even unlocked until you’ve beaten the game once. Let me say that even on the standard Hard mode, the game can be brutal so only true FPS Gods will be able to overcome this challenge.

The visuals are superb with great detail to gore and the weapons are nicely detailed. The levels are well designed and the framerate is steady throughout. I didn’t come across any bugs during my time and was impressed with the soundtrack too.

The Verdict

Trepang2 may not be the most original FPS out there, but it does provide a highly enjoyable experience for fans of fast-paced shooting and provides plenty of gore and a tough challenge for those wanting to nab the Platinum.
