PS5 Review: Crossy Road Castle

How high can you get?

Bring your friends and see how far you can get in this endless spinning tower of arcade fun! Keep climbing as high as you can. Every run is different. Designed for co-operative arcade platforming chaos. You can also play solo, but everything’s more fun with friends, right?

Crossy Road Castle is a never-ending platformer where you ascend the castle from room to room with only 3 lives before it’s game over. You will be able to buy lives on certain floors if you are running low, but the question is how high can you go? After a certain number of floors, you’ll go against a boss that itself will take 3 hits to beat and will get harder each time you face it.

There are other castle designs to unlock, so you won’t always end up with the same boss, which is good as replaying the same one over and over can get a bit tiresome. The levels are different each time you play, so you can’t learn a pattern of stages. It can be fun to play with others as they can either get in your way or help, it’s more chaotic that way but I found it more enjoyable.

The original Crossy Road Castle has been out on Apple Arcade since 2020 but has finally made its way to consoles. There are no microtransactions or anything like that, but you can unlock other costumes with the in-game coins you earn.  It does have the look and feel of a mobile game with its interface and mechanics, but it does also work as a console game with controller support and again, no microtransactions.

The visuals are simple by design and to keep up the style of the original game, which is a bit different to this. I remember my son playing the original Crossy Road when he was really young, so I wasn’t expecting its sequel to play so differently. I’m pleased though as that game was a pain. Framerate is steady and the music is pretty catchy too.

The Verdict

While it can’t entirely shake it’s mobile roots, Crossy Road Castle still manages to deliver a highly enjoyable platforming experience that’s different every time you play, and it’s even more fun and chaotic with friends.

Score: 8.0
