Can you save retro gaming?
A retro-style adventure platformer game, inspired by hits of the past and featuring wonderful music created by Manami Matsumae, will take you on an eventful journey through the diverse environmental stages to encourage you to save the world of retro gaming. Embark on a journey with Ossan, Mao, Taicho, Matchan and Notchi as you harness their newfound abilities bestowed upon them by the Retro Goddess. Meet companions from the past, defend yourself from enemies, and overcome the bosses blocking your way to the Demon Overlord of Triple-A.
Retro Revengers is a traditional retro platformer, which takes its cues from the likes of Mega Man with a boss fight at the end of each stage. There are 5 in total and you will play as a different character in each that has their own unique style of combat and platforming. These range from using farts to double jump or using a yo-yo to attach to objects.
There are a lot of nods to old-school games and plenty of good humour that likes to poke fun at things like specific types of levels and so on. While it’s not the longest game by any means, there is an opportunity for a double Platinum here for trophy fans. The Mega Man love doesn’t stop at the gameplay though, but it’s a big coup for the developers to get Manami Matsumae of Mega Man/Shovel Knight fame to make the music, and he does not disappoint…there are some exceptional tunes here. The visuals are classically retro as you would expect. Load times were non-existent and I came across no glitches throughout.
The Verdict
Retro Revengers is a very short experience, but one full of nods and gags to retro gaming. It handles well and offers different gameplay for each stage. For anyone who loves an old-school platformer like Mega Man, you won’t be disappointed.
