PS4 Review: Dungeons 2

The Dungeon Lord summons you to do his looting…

Dungeons 2 is your standard RTS with the small exception that you are playing as the evil side. You are the Dungeon Lord and will summon warriors to fight alongside you in battle as you try and take back the surface from those nasty humans. Kalypso have had great success in this genre with the likes of Tropico and Grand Ages: Medieval. But how does Dungeons 2 stack up?

As far as an RTS goes, Dungeons 2 does a decent job…it just doesn’t reinvent the wheel, which is no bad thing. It’s about as close to a sequel to Dungeon Keeper as we’ll probably get, which too is no bad thing. One thing that is bad however, is the plot and forced humour…but if you ignore it, it’s no deal breaker.

It’s definitely an old-school experience, one that is rare to find these days and yet, feels fresh. It’s not going to set the world alight, but one that certainly keeps it interesting. With the exception of a few games, consoles have never been kind to RTS games…but it’s good to see it when they finally get it just right.

Visually, it’s a little on the basic side and honestly, the text during the game’s introduction is so small I thought I would have to get out a magnifying glass to read it. It will take a while to get used to the game’s controls and there is a steep learning curve, but if you can get past that then you’ll be just fine.

The Verdict

Dungeons 2 may not reinvent RTS games, but it does provide a fun and rewarding experience that will please old-school fans. Definitely one to consider picking up.
