Does this fishing game sink or swim?
Time for a Fishing Break! Get on your boat and go on a fishing trip all around the world. Catch big rare fish, upgrade your gear, and build your collection!
Fishing Break was originally an iOS/Android title that launched all the way back in 2016, so it is a bit baffling why after all this time that it has headed to Switch. It’s very basic as you tap a cursor where you want the line to land, wait for a fish to grab the hook and begin to reel it in with a single button.
The real problem is that it doesn’t feel like it belongs on a console. The simplest of things, casting your rod is a real pain in the bass (Sorry, bad fish pun!) and even though the microtransactions have been removed, you can see they really wanted to keep them with the way it is designed.
It was probably an ok time to pass the time on a phone or tablet, for a few minutes…but on console, its just not fit for purpose. Its dull, repetitive and feels soulless. There wasn’t anything I found satisfying about it. The soundtrack gets the job done, but that’s about it.
The Verdict
Fishing Break feels like it never should have come to Switch. It doesn’t feel built for it in any way, simply ending up as another poorly optimised iOS/Android port.
