That’s just how I roll…
Get ready to roll, shoot and boost your way through a futuristic wonderland in pursuit of an ever more glitched-out rogue AI, uncovering and mastering an increasingly ridiculous arsenal of weapons, abilities and upgrades as you go. Blast your enemies to bits as a gun-toting walking mech, and knock your foes into the abyss as an agile rolling ball! Go Mecha Ball mixes acrobatic, physical 3D platforming with chaotic, punchy arcade roguelite action. Discover synergies and hone your playstyle by mixing and matching dozens of weapons, abilities and upgrades as well as four different mechs.
Go Mecha Ball is about as arcade as it can get. You play in a mech suit that can roll up in a ball like Samus Aran, but with more of a pinball vibe. You shoot wave after wave of enemies for as long as you can survive. You won’t start with much to begin with, but you will get more as you progress, as in most roguelites.
The feel of the game is very satisfying. It’s a great feeling to roll up a ramp, exit ball form and lay waste to your foes in mid-air. The shooting mechanics work like a traditional twin-stick shooter and it works well, plus it feels pretty good too. A quick glance at the game and you’d think it’s a cakewalk because it looks cartoony…you’d be wrong. Go Mecha Ball is very challenging, especially the bosses…so don’t go expecting an easy ride here, you will be brought back down to reality if you think that.
The visuals are vibrant and well animated. The PS5 version runs at a smoother framerate than the Switch version, but I was impressed with how well the latter handled. I’d recommend it for either platform, it just depends on your own personal preference. The soundtrack is decent too with some impressive tracks to keep you pumped throughout your run.
The Verdict
Go Mecha Ball is incredibly fun and satisfying to play. It will last as long as you enjoy it, which could be a considerable amount of time, or not depending on your own tastes. I personally couldn’t put it down for a good while and if you enjoy pinball games or old fashioned twin stick shooters, then you’ll be more than happy with what’s on offer.
