Xbox One Review: Solar Shifter EX

EX-tremely difficult…

Solar Shifter EX is a vertical scrolling shoot-em-up, much like classic arcade games of the past. The only difference is that this game has tried to cut it in the modern age with it’s refinements, but has it paid off or is this one ship that’s headed for a crash landing?

It’s a little bit of both. The game handles well and gives you the ability to shift/teleport either to or away from the action, but the camera is troublesome throughout and the difficulty is razor sharp. Just looking at the Achievement list I know it’s not going to be a game I get 1000 gamerscore out of, ever. The game does give you the odd checkpoint during a mission, but these are rare and getting to that point without being gunned down is one hell of a journey.

It’s so ridiculously difficult that I can see hardcore arcade enthusiasts running for the hills. It’s in the same league as something like Ikaruga, just minus the fun. I found it so hard to progress that I honestly didn’t think I’d be able to finish the game’s 18 missions.

The game’s visuals aren’t terrible, but they could have been a lot better too. The soundtrack is a mixed bag, but is drowned out with the gunfire so if you enjoy it, I’d recommend turning down the sound effects to get the most out of it.

The Verdict

Solar Shifter EX is in the top 5 hardest games I’ve ever played, for better or worse is for you to decide. Is it so difficult it can be deemed unplayable? Or have games become so easy over the years that a game like this shows the difference between old-school and new-school gamers? It’s an open debate that you will have to decide with your wallet, just be wary if you think you’re tough enough…because Solar Shifter EX takes no prisoners.
