Does this motel deserve a one-star rating on TripAdvisor?
It’s late at night. It is raining. You are a traveler, tired after a long journey. The only shelter you have is an old motel on the highway. It looks ordinary: dim lights, a shabby reception desk, a polite but strange concierge. He keeps repeating one thing: don’t go near the wall. He says something is wrong in Room 8. You stay the night and start looking for answers. What happened in this motel? Why is no one going into Room 8? And is it true that someone is still watching from inside?
Last Guest is a strange game that’s roughly 20 minutes long. There’s no voice-acting and the story is only told through text. It’s first person as you go from the reception to pick up your keys from the weird concierge and then to your room. You’ll come across a creepy mechanic who delivers the first jump scare unintentionally before going to sleep.
You’ll be woken by a knock at the door by the concierge who told you not to look out the window and that the man in Number 8 is after you now. Avoiding spoilers going forward, it all goes wrong very quickly, and the end is completely predictable. The problem is that none of it is really explained very well. What is the motive of the man in Number 8? We end up finding out nothing about him or why the motel itself is so weird.
So ultimately it feels like a bitter experience since it raises more questions than answers. I think there were about 3 jump scares in the entire thing, although they did actually catch me when I was even expecting them…much to my embarrassment. I did laugh afterwards because they were quite bad in retrospect.
The visuals are a mixed bag. The cutscenes and character models look dated. The motel itself is nicely detailed though. The framerate is fine, and I didn’t encounter any glitches.
The Verdict
Last Guest is a very brief experience that doesn’t explain a lot and leaves you with more questions than when you began. A very bizarre experience that made me want to check out of that motel and never return.
