Is this still the elite sniping franchise?
Offering unparalleled sniping mechanics, stealth and tactical third-person combat, Sniper Elite: Resistance turns the attention of the award-winning series towards a hidden war, far from the front lines, deep within the heart of occupied France. In a gripping new story that runs parallel with Sniper Elite 5, Harry Hawker, agent of the Special Operations Executive (SOE), takes the lead for the first time as he discovers an insidious new Wunderwaffe – something so powerful, it guarantees the Nazis will win the war.
The Sniper Elite games have been going for a while now, with each taking on a new area and improving upon its predecessor. Sniper Elite: Resistance feels more like an expansion than a true sequel to Sniper Elite 5 and while some might argue that it might have fared better as DLC, having it as a standalone makes it accessible to everyone without needing the base game, so I’m all in favour of it.
The campaign missions are typical of the series. Stealth is key, so going in guns blazing will just get you killed. The bullet slow-mo and x-ray kill cams still play out as you would expect, while real players can invade your campaign if you have the option selected…but you too can also go and try and wreck someone else’s mission if you want to.
You can also play the campaign co-operatively online with another player, there’s also competitive multiplayer with deathmatch and survival modes included. All of these are enjoyable, but again it’s nothing we haven’t seen before. I did enjoy the campaign’s large open areas as well as the newly added Propaganda missions which are time-based challenges where you play as a Resistance soldier trying to get high scores, so it’s more combat focused. You can get these by finding posters in the campaign, so keep your eyes peeled…
The visuals are pretty good, even if they do look the same as Sniper Elite 5’s. The framerate is solid throughout and while the voice-acting of Harry can be a bit grating at times, it’s far from the worst voice-acting I’ve come across. The soundtrack is also superb throughout.
The Verdict
Sniper Elite: Resistance isn’t Sniper Elite 6, but it’s still an enjoyable entry in the series and acts as a buffer between it and a true successor to Sniper Elite 5.
