PS5 Review: Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo

Does this game yo-yo between good and bad?

Tighten up that string and bust out the yoyo moves! In this 2D top-down adventure you’ll explore a sprawling urban landscape, reinterpreting your surroundings through your mastery of yoyo tricks. Solve puzzles, fight the city’s rival crime lords, and regain the influence of the Pipistrello family! Combine old and new yoyo tricks to combat evil masterminds, and pay attention to your surroundings to discover new ways to traverse the terrain! Your versatile yoyo moves enable you to reinterpret the cityscape, allowing you to dexterously reach places never thought of before – the very best puzzle-platformer experience!

Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo feels like a love letter to both Zelda and Metroidvania with its design and has a GBA-style look to it that is just charming. The story is amusing, and the controls are simple enough to pick up.

There’s plenty of hidden nooks and crannies for you and your yo-yo to reach. Collectibles and upgrades scattered all around and you won’t be satisfied until you’ve uncovered every last one. As a huge Zelda fan, I just fell in love with this game, and I couldn’t rest until I nabbed the Platinum trophy. It had me that hooked, I just couldn’t put it down.

The GBA-esque visuals are just full of charm and nostalgia for games like Minish Cap, Metroid Fusion and even WarioLand 4. The music also has that retro feel, while the overall performance is smooth and I didn’t come across any bugs during my playthrough.

The Verdict

Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo is a superb top-down adventure from beginning to end. If you love Zelda or Metroidvania games, you cannot let this slip past you.

Score: 9.0
