PS5 Review: Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii

Should you sail the seas with Mad Dog Majima?

Embark on an over-the-top, modern-day pirate adventure with an ex-yakuza, now pirate captain & his crew. Engage in exhilarating combat on land and sea in the hunt for lost memories and treasure.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth was the previous entry in the series and I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. I was curious to see where the developers would next take the series and was surprised to see it divert as a spinoff entry with Goro Majima playing Pirates…but is it worth sailing off with Captain Majima?

Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii has more traditional combat like featured in Like a Dragon Gaiden and the Yakuza series before turn-based combat was introduced. It has also been simplified if you aren’t great at remembering combos, so you can just hit Square to let Majima unleash his attacks. He can also unleash doppelgangers alongside him to fight.

Mini-games have always been a big part of the series and are just as you would expect. The length of the game is roughly the same as Like a Dragon Gaiden, but there’s more activities as well as naval battles with swashbuckling adventures throughout.

I have just purchased a PS5 Pro and was able to see the difference in visuals and performance. The story is decent and yet another great entry for the series. The voice-acting is well done and the music is great as always.

The Verdict

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is a decent spin-off after the superb Infinite Wealth. It may not be the longest game in the series and it is as over-the-top, but its still another great entry for the franchise.

Score: 9.0
