Is this D&D Remaster worth a roll of the die?
Return to the city of Neverwinter in Dungeons & Dragons Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition. A dark force sweeps over Faerun, ravaging everything in its path as though searching for something – something that you now find in your possession. As the Shard-Bearer, only you can stop the King of Shadows and his army from desecrating the land you call home. Will you save Faerun, or fall victim to the temptation of absolute power? When your actions dictate the fate of the Realms, there are no small choices.
I never played the original Neverwinter Nights, Neverwinter Nights 2 or the free-to-play MMO Neverwinter, so I didn’t really know what to expect here. It does get a nice facelift from the original, but is there more substance to this remaster?
Aspyr have a mixed history with their remasters, sometimes hitting gold while others having felt barebones in terms of what they’ve added and changed. Neverwinter Nights 2 falls a bit into the latter camp, though it does add controller support which was missing in the original PC release. That doesn’t stop it being a great game and fans of the original Obsidian game will enjoy the remaster.
The new UI is a nice improvement from what I saw of the original and they’ve done a fair job in bringing controller support to the game. It’s not going to be a game for everyone, but any D&D fan will be right at home here.
The visuals have had a nice uplift from the original and the framerate seems to be consistent. Audio quality is decent too. It can be a bit buggy at times and the game itself can feel a bit dated by today’s standards, but it’s still a decent RPG.
The Verdict
Dungeons & Dragons Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition brings the game to a new generation with this preservation effort. It may seem like a simple port, but Aspyr have done well to bring this game to consoles. If you love D&D, then you’ll love this.
