Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition is an interesting game. It has 13 of the best NES games including Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong and more for you to play, but only short section challenge modes. The full list of games included is below:
- Super Mario Bros. 1
- Super Mario Bros. 2
- Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels
- Super Mario Bros. 3
- The Legend of Zelda
- Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
- Metroid
- Kid Icarus
- Donkey Kong
- Balloon Fight
- Excitebike
- Ice Climber
- Kirby’s Adventure
For example, you’ll try and get the fastest time on collecting a number of coins in a Mario stage or how quickly you can get the sword from the old man in the original Zelda. There are over 150 of these challenges to complete, some that are easy and some not quite as much. You can compete these challenges with friends locally or online, but the online functionality is limited and there sadly aren’t even online leaderboards included, which feels like a missed opportunity.
That being said, it still provides a decent challenge of NES classics and at a low price point too. It does become quite addictive to try and beat your own personal best or a friend’s. It can become very competitive in the right scenarios.
Some might begrudge that certain games didn’t get included like Punch-Out, but it’s an impressive collection regardless. You will gain coins for completing challenges which you can use to unlock other ones for whatever of the games you want, so if you want to do them all then you need to be good enough to earn enough coins to unlock them in the first place. It adds a nice additional challenge to the overall package.
The Verdict
Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition is a nice, affordable compilation of select NES games’ certain moments. The lack of online leaderboards is a shame, but there’s still no greater feeling than smashing the PB of the person next to you.
