Do these old classics reach for the skies?

Get all the toys in the toy chest with this double pack, featuring both Toy Story: Retro Roundup! and Toy Story 3 Complete Edition. Play as classic characters as you navigate familiar worlds and take on challenges inspired by the films. Toy Story: Retro Roundup! includes 11 classic games, with both console and handheld versions of four Toy Story games, along with A Bug’s Life. Toy Story 3 Complete Edition brings back the fan-favourite 3D adventure for modern consoles.

I was thinking a few months ago about movie tie-in games and how they aren’t really that much of a thing anymore. You’d get a game based on more or less any film, especially animated ones back in the PS2-era. It kept going a bit during the PS3 era, but it seems to have more or less shrivelled up now.

When I thought back to any decent ones, I immediately thought of the likes of Spider-Man 2 but going even further back, I really enjoyed the Mega Drive version of Toy Story. It held a lot of good memories for me, and I hadn’t played it in years, so I was excited to revisit it and see if what I could remember from my childhood days playing it. I have to say that I did though it still took some getting used to handling.

The Retro Roundup collection on its own contains a decent number of classic Toy Story games, some of which I haven’t actually played so it was nice to see what other games I missed out on. As with most retro compilations, this one has plenty of quality-of-life improvements, visual filters, enhancements and a rewind feature. It does have cheats, but they disable trophies, so trophy hunters need to make sure none are enabled here.

All in all, Retro Roundup is impressive and I do like that you can get it separately from the Toy Story 3 Complete Edition, so gamers have the choice of what they want.

Toy Story 3 Complete Edition is an updated version of the 2010 game, which I reviewed back in the day here. I was impressed with the overall visual and performance updates to the game, though it still has some of the issues with gameplay and the camera from time to time. It’s still nice to see on modern systems though, especially since we no doubt will never get a Toy Story 4 or 5 game.

The Verdict

Toy Story Retro Roundup! and Toy Story 3 Complete Edition are great for any Toy Story fan. It’s cheaper to get them as a bundle than individually, but even then, they are worth the price on their own merits. Hard not to recommend.
