Should you take a trip to Bellabel Park?
Super Mario Wonder for Switch was already an amazing entry in the Mario series. It maintains the classic 2.5D gameplay but mixed things up with the Wonder Flowers that made each level act in new ways, both weird and interesting. It also introduced us to the Talking Flowers for the first time and was the first Mario game to be voiced by someone after Charles Martinet’s retirement from the role.
The Switch 2 Edition ups the visuals to 4K as you would expect but also comes with the additional content “Meetup in Bellabel Park” which adds the Koopalings to the base game as boss fights, alongside a park to decorate with flowers you earn from completing Bellabel water earned from training challenges. There’s also a decent number of co-op and competitive modes to be played either locally or online with friends.
The Koopaling boss battles are inventive as they each transform with Wonder Flowers and are some of the most interesting Mario bosses I’ve come across. I won’t give anything away, but they transform and act in ways I weren’t expecting.
There are 60 training challenges to beat, and these are no walk in the park. They can vary from being invisible to not being able to collect a coin or touch an enemy through a course and a few other tough scenarios. The Park can be decorated with dozens of different flower patterns and there’s also a Poplin music band that needs members added, also found by using Bellabel water.
The Verdict
If you’ve already beat the original Super Mario Wonder, I’d still say that the Switch 2 Edition is worth the upgrade with the extra content and improvements to visuals and performance.
If you’re new to Wonder, then this is the definitive version and a well worthy addition to your Switch 2 collection.
