Xbox One Review: All-Star Fruit Racing

How do you like them apples?

All-Star Fruit Racing propels players into vibrant worlds filled with incredible action: drift through looping bends, soar over monumental jumps and defy gravity itself around tubular tracks in an explosively colourful racer bursting with championships, modes and awe-inspiring sights!

All-Star Fruit Racing is your typical kart-racing experience filled in a fruit filled world, funnily enough the characters aren’t fruit but people. I personally thought the game would have bananas with googly eyes racing against an orange with a cheeky grin, but never mind…what we get is fruit-based levels and power-ups. There’s a decent variety in the courses and weapons, though it doesn’t quite have the same level of finesse or replay value as one featuring a certain plumber…

Still though, the game is quite fun and handles well. It runs at a consistent framerate and is vibrant, colourful and is visually pleasing. Online mode is basic but at least you actually can play against players, something a more recent racing game lacks *Cough* The Crew 2 *Cough*. The sound effects let it down somewhat and I can’t help feeling that a track editor would be great and add a lot of potential to the game.

The Verdict

All-Star Fruit Racing could have been more than just Mario Kart with fruit, but in the end that’s what it ends up being. Still though, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and ASFR does it well.
