XBLA Review: Super Meat Boy

Quite a meaty package?

Super Meat Boy’s girlfriend, Bandage Girl has been kidnapped by the evil Dr Fetus and has to be rescued! It’s the basic plot and the game looks simple, but looks are deceptive and Super Meat Boy is too…

The game plays like your standard platformer, but are split into very short levels as you try to make your way to Bandage Girl through the many objects in your way. The levels may only take a few seconds each, but they are brutal and you will die multiple times on many of them as you try and reach the goal. There are tons of levels to complete, each with a Light and Dark equivalent to add an even longer lifespan. Add in collectable bandages in the levels that unlock more characters and you have a very long and incredibly difficult game.

If anything is certain about Super Meat Boy, it’s that you will die. There’s no escaping it, you will die many, many, many times and this will likely put off a lot of people, but platformers are perhaps too easy these days and Super Meat Boy reminds us of just how hard games used to be. Although this is even tougher than the likes of Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels, so just be prepared to be challenged to the point where your sanity will desert you…

The game first appeared on Newgrounds, so it retains the Flash look and as a result, looks basic but it’s also quite charming. The music and sound effects is classic arcade in style and fit very well.

The Verdict

Super Meat Boy is incredibly challenging, even for the biggest platforming veteran. There are plenty of levels to get your teeth into and plenty of reasons to keep playing, just be prepared to go mad from the amount of times you will die…
