XBLA Review: ilomilo

Cute puzzle games CAN be fun…

ilomilo is a puzzle game where you control two characters across levels where you must reunite them to continue. The levels are set out with blocks and both your characters will need to do something to open the way for them to meet. Sounds simple? Well, it is and it isn’t…

The game puts many obstacles in the way between ilo and milo, so finding the solution isn’t always so straightforward. Gravity, deployable blocks, switches and lots more will help or hinder your progress through the number of stages. It’s a charming game that has a LBP look to it, but is unique in its design, which helps it stand out from the crowd of other puzzle games.

It may appear to be a game for the younger player, but it is quite challenging sometimes. There is a story element to the game, but it’s more of an afterthought and not important to the gameplay at all. Multiplayer gets you to hunt for eggs that are only accessible in this mode, which adds more replay value to the rather short game. Yes, the game is on the short side. There are 49 levels, but each of these can be solved in a few minutes if you know the solution, and if you don’t…there are always answers online.

ilomilo is a great looking game with charming visuals. The music is also catchy, even if it’s designed for the younger crowd. Owners of Raskulls and A World of Keflings can also dress up Ilo and Milo in outfits from those games if they have achievements unlocked in each game.

The Verdict

All in all, ilomilo is a great puzzle game for XBLA and well worthy of the 800 Microsoft Points price tag. It may be on the short side, but it’s charming, addictive and most importantly, fun.
