Wii U Review: Bit Dungeon+

Plus or negative?

Bit Dungeon+ is a two-player action rogue-like adventure. You and your loved one have been captured and trapped in a dungeon for a thousand years. You wake up in a cell – grab your weapon and let the quest to find her soul begin!

Explore randomised dungeons and hack and slash your way through dangerous bosses. The difficulty increases as you become stronger and stronger, so upgrade your character with powerful passive abilities.

That’s the official summary of this Wii U game that you can download for a mere £5 on Nintendo eShop. It’s one of a long list of retro looking games, it features 16-bit visuals and classic retro gameplay such as randomised dungeons and can be played either on the Gamepad or TV. The one you are not using shows the map on that screen, which is helpful if you lose track of where you’ve been or more importantly…where you haven’t been.

You will pick up armour and weapons that improve as you progress, which is essential if you want to get anywhere since the game is somewhat on the tricky side. It’s also classic in terms of brutal difficulty at times, while one mode will pit you against a timer to see how far you can ascend the dungeon’s tower before time runs out.

It’s actually a pretty impressive game, even if it doesn’t look like much at a first glance. What’s great about it is that each time you play, it’s different…and it’s easy to just pick up and play for a bit, then come back to it. Plus the classic retro look and music is always welcome on my gaming systems.

The Verdict

It may not be the most original dungeon game, but Bit Dungeon+ is fun and memorable nonetheless. The classic retro feel is here and well worth a look and when all is said and done, it’s a steal at it’s low price.
