PS4 Review: What The Dub?!

Insert Missing Pun Here…

What The Dub?! is a multiplayer party game where each player overdubs missing dialogue from hilariously awful B-movies, woefully outdated PSAs, and bizarre industrial films, with their own witty (or just plain stupid) dubs. Players watch the dubs and vote on the best one. The player with the highest score at the end of the game wins! It’s just that easy!

What the Dub is a interesting game that lets you enter in missing dialogue from old movies, only to have them voiced out by an AI, which is a great concept. There are a few hurdles to overcome beforehand, the first is that you’ll need at least 3 players (or 3 different devices/browsers) to play as the game is played through internet browsers. It took me a while to get it up and running since I don’t actually have a 3rd person to play the game with, so me and my partner worked together so one of us had 2 browsers open and the other had 1 just so we could play.

There’s no online play either, so it’s either a minimum of 3 browsers or you’re out of luck, which I get as it wouldn’t make much sense in terms of voting for the dubs as no-one would win, but a 2 player non-competitive mode just for laughs would have been a nice work around for those who lack that 3rd player in their household and it’s not like you can invite someone round for a party game at the time of writing, so it’s cumbersome to say the least.

The game itself supports upto 12 players so if you have anywhere near that in your house, then you’re in luck. The dubbing itself is done brilliantly and it can be uncensored too, so you can be just as random and rude as you can. You can also add sound effects to the dub for an added effect, these vary from the classic Wilhelm scream to a toilet flush and can improve your dub.

The Verdict

What The Dub?! is a great concept and works well as long as you meet the requirements to play, otherwise it can be a pain to set up and it’s just not as fun as it can be. Hopefully when the world is back to some sort of normality then this game will be more appreciated as more can join in the fun.
