PS4 Review: Tales from the Borderlands: Episode 3 – Catch a Ride

It’s time to catch a ride in Episode 3…

We last left Tales from the Borderlands as Rhys and company finally came across the Gortys Project, which aims to find a Vault Key. Depending on what if you decided to side with the Handsome Jack AI or Fiona changes the way the episode goes, I decided to side with Fiona just in case Handsome Jack used it to somehow control Rhys in a later episode. There are a few unexpected twists in this episode and proof of just how brutal life can be on Pandora.

Upon escaping with Gortys, Rhys and everyone are confronted by a woman called Vallory who is known as the Queenpin. It later turns out to be Augusts’ mother and furious with him that he messed up the deal for the fake Fault Key. Athena appeared in the last episode chasing Fiona and Sasha, but it turns out that Felix had hired her to protect them, which really pays off for them after a showdown with Brick and Mordecai, two other Vault Hunters who fans of the series should remember.

Gortys turns out to be nothing more than a cute child-like robot who knows how to get the Vault Key, but needs to be fully upgraded in order to do so. The first upgrade is found at a Atlas terraforming facility where they find a strange man who turns out to be the last Atlas employee, as Athena has killed most of them at this point. He points them in the direction of the upgrade, but clearly has a hidden agenda.

The episode ends with Gortys saying where his next upgrade is, which doesn’t come as much of a surprise…it’s Helios. So we know where we’re headed for Episode 4, which I suppose will have some impact on the Handsome Jack AI going back to Helios. There’s also a small matter of a potential romance with Rhys and Sasha and I wonder if it will go any further, Telltale hasn’t really done a love story before as far as I know, so it’ll be interesting to see how they go with it.

The Verdict

Catch a Ride is a bit on the short side, it flies by without stopping for air. It’s brutal, relentless and the series is taken up a notch. It’ll be interesting to return to Helios and see what’s in store for Rhys and Sasha, as well as how Rhys and Fiona are captured. Hopefully Episode 4 will bring the story full circle in time for a epic conclusion for Episode 5. I just hope the wait isn’t too long for it.
