PS4 Review: SuperEpic: The Entertainment War

Is this Metroidvania game Super Epic?

Join a racoon and a llama in their quest to save videogames as we know them! SuperEpic is a Metroidvania style action adventure game filled with humour and satire. The gameplay is nonlinear and fast paced, with exploration and combo-based combat the weapon of choice against the evil Regnantcorp.

SuperEpic is your typical Metroidvania experience, but with tongue-in-cheek humour that pokes fun at games that is really refreshing. The story is random as hell but provides enough to push you forward in your quest as a raccoon riding a llama. Yes, you read that right. A raccoon riding a llama…

Exploration takes you all over the place and naturally backtracking when you have new abilities to access new areas, while combat feels fluid and while it won’t win any awards for originality, is still a highly enjoyable experience. The enemies are fairly easy to beat once you get to grips with the combat mechanics but can still pose a challenge at times.

There’s also an intuitive use of QR codes that you can scan to play minigames on your phone, including a Flappy Bird parody and the game itself pokes fun at microtransactions and naturally has the members of Regnantcorp be pigs to show the greedy nature of big game publishers.

Visually, the game is a throwback to the likes of Super Metroid and is charming as a result. The soundtrack isn’t too bad while the sound effects are also retro by design.

The Verdict

SuperEpic is a decent Metroidvania experience that pokes fun at microtransactions and gaming in general, its combat is rewarding and exploring is fun. The minigames from the QR codes are also enjoyable and a different way of playing. This is definitely worth your time and a steal at just £12.99.
