PS4 Review: Darksiders: Warmastered Edition

War returns for the remastered port, but how is it?

The original Darksiders was one of my favourite games of the last generation, combining gameplay from the likes of God of War and The Legend of Zelda, with a Angels vs Demons mythology that sounded like an epic idea for a series of Supernatural. You play as War, one of the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse who has been accused of triggering the end of the world early and is sent back to Earth after Humanity’s destruction to prove his innocence and bring justice to the real culprit.

This “Warmastered Edition” is essentially a 1080p/60FPS remastered version, but it also supports PS4 Pro and runs at 4K as well…something the PC version will also be able to do, but many assumed the PS4 version wouldn’t get the same treatment. Having a PS4 Pro and a 4K TV in my possession, I was lucky enough to try out the game in this way and all I can say is…damn, what a fine upgrade.

I always hope that one day we will see a third game, after this and it’s sequel still left us without a true ending to the series…but for now, it’s great to have another chance to go through the original in it’s improved state. I always loved how the game balanced hack-n-slash, Zelda like dungeons and even an element of Metroid-style backtracking with your upgrades.

If you missed out on the original game, now is the perfect time to see what all the fuss is about..while it’s a bit of a harder sell if you played the original to death, other than the improved visuals and framerate…there’s no new content, which is a shame. Even something small like an extra weapon would have gone down well with fans, but still..it’s fairly cheap for a remastered version and considering the length of the game, makes it seem like a steal.

The Verdict

Darksiders: Warmastered Edition is a superb remaster of a great game. It looks so much better in 1080P/4K and 60FPS and is a worthy addition to your gaming library, regardless if you’ve played it before or not. New content would have been nice, but this is still great value for money.
