PS4 Review: Batman – The Enemy Within: Episode 1 – The Enigma

Batman is back and so is the Riddler…

It only seemed that the Telltale series for Batman had finished and now it’s back. The story takes place a little while after the events of the Children of Arkham arc. Telltale have mixed the Batman lore to make it unique, this time making out that the Riddler was a big criminal back in the pre-Batman days of Gotham before he suddenly reappears to try and kill a arms dealer at his casino.

After foiling him, Batman and Gordon are confronted by none other than Amanda Waller from the Agency (or ARGUS for you real DC fans) and takes over the investigation FBI-style, which obviously irritates Gordon. The Riddler left a puzzle box at the crime, which later turns out to be an audio receiver for missiles to launch at…which Batman finds out all too late as a close friend is cruelly taken away. It was a bit of a shock, to be honest, Telltale clearly has no qualms about killing off certain DC characters.

At the funeral, Bruce is approached by John Doe (Joker) who he met in Arkham Asylum and you have the choice to agree to meet his new friends or not, while he also knows the Riddler and gives you hints as to his location. Which turns out to be a Saw-like puzzle that he and Gordon have to work to escape from. It’s not for the faint-hearted, but it is impressive.

The episode ends after Riddler is foiled, but then something surprising happens and it’s clear that Joker’s friends are responsible. Of course, the friends are the Court of Owls although they have yet to be revealed by their true name.

The Verdict

The Enemy Within’s first episode makes a huge impact with it’s twists and changes to the traditional DC storylines that Telltale have made their own. If the first episode is any indication, the rest of the series will be dynamite…plus I hear Harley Quinn is making her debut!
