Preview: UFC Undisputed 2010

How is this year’s UFC game holding up?

Yesterday, I got my hands-on UFC Undisputed 2010. Last year’s game was impressive, but there were things that were cumbersome (as described by the devs at the event) but a lot of things have been improved like being able to switch fighting styles, a deeper career mode and great tools for customisation.

The build I got to play was missing most of the options but I was able to play exhibition and tournament modes. There were also only a number of fighters, so the full roster wasn’t available. The good thing is that I could create my own fighter and pit him against the others, the level of parts that you can customise was impressive…especially with things like scars and tattoos, you can now place them anywhere as well as layer them on top of each other.

Fighting remains familiar, but there have been some changes like using the right analogue stick to pin down your opponent and to work with pulling off takedowns. I personally found it to be a little confusing at times, but with practise I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it. Punching and kicking is mapped to the A,B,X,Y buttons and taunting is mapped to the d-pad. There is no stamina bar or anything like that in the game, so you can keep on punching without getting tired. Visually, this year’s UFC is looking pretty good. It’s the small details that stand out for me like a mouth guard flying out of your opponent with a knock to the face, cuts and bruises are also well detailed.

Overall, UFC Undisputed 2010 looks set to be a great improvement over last year’s game. Time will tell if this will be the end result, but so far…it’s looking good, it handles well and is just fun to play.
