Off Road (Wii)
By: Adam Waddilove

Does this game steer off road like its name suggests?

Race 18 of Land Rover and Ford's toughest off road trucks, 4x4s and SUVs through beautifully detailed environments, stunning scenery and wide sweeping tracks designed for tough, high-speed racing. With acceleration faster than any previous Ford game, real-time, on-the-go vehicle damage repair and in-game pick-ups, the racing has never been this exhilarating!

Off Road for Nintendo Wii Features:

  • 18 officially licensed Land Rover and Ford off road vehicles.
  • 24 detailed tracks encouraging high speed racing.
  • 3 off road environments, Desert, Water and Ice.
  • Real time, on-the-go damage repair.
  • Two player split screen mode.
  • Exciting Wii Remote steering mechanism.
  • Pick up and play handling.
  • Discover hidden routes to gain a racing advantage.
  • Power sliding; throw powerful 4x4s around the tracks.
  • In-game pickups: Discover repair pods, time extensions, artifacts & cash.
  • 12 race modes.

After the greatness that is Mario Kart on the Wii, it would take something pretty amazing to surpass it. Off Road tries to with its licensed vehicles and tilt controls, even letting you use the Wii Wheel but it lacks any true quality with its tracks and the tilt control leaves a lot to be desired.

Using 4x4 vehicles in treacherous terrain like desert, water and ice is a good idea but poorly executed. The motion controls don’t really respond as well as you’d hope and in some ways, it reminds me of how I looked when I was using the PS3’s SIXAXIS for Fatal Inertia EX. Off Road tries to do a lot but it doesn’t really know what type of game it wants to be, it has realistic features like damage but adds in pick-ups like cash and artifacts, which seem out of place in a game like this.

The lack of online hurts the game even more when compared to MK, that made online its own but Off Road only offers 2 player multiplayer, why not 3 or 4? Seems like a missed opportunity to me. It would have also been good if you could design your own tracks with the Wii Remote, but the game is very bare bones when compared to the competition out there, there’s a real lack of replay value and the lifespan isn’t all that long, either by doing all the tracks or playing it once and never wanting to touch it again. I’d suggest neither and stick to the good racing games instead of racing 4x4’s, which is silly in itself.

The game doesn’t look too bad for a Wii game; the vehicles are well designed and look authentic enough. It’s a shame that there’s nothing outstanding about them or the tracks; they lack any real innovation and are disappointing when you look at other racing games, even other bad ones. The soundtrack is hardly memorable, which sums up the game as a whole.

    The Verdict

Off Road on Wii does just that, it drives off road and straight into a ditch but can’t get out of it. It lacks anything original, handles poorly and looks fairly bad too. I’d say avoid unless you have some weird thing about 4x4’s.
